3. IN-SERVICE TRAINING

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs) in Florida must complete ongoing in-service training to maintain their credentials and comply with state and federal regulations.

Requirements Breakdown

  • CNA Requirements: Florida CNAs must complete 24 hours of in-service training every two years (biennium) for license renewal, including mandatory topics like bloodborne pathogens, infection control, and domestic violence. Hours are tracked and reported via CE Broker.

  • HHA Requirements: Certified Home Health Aides must complete at least 12 hours of in-service training annually under Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and federal CMS guidelines, which is typically tracked by their employing home health agency.

Courses Included:

In-Service Training Requirements for a Certified Nursing Assistant: All CNAs must complete at least 24 hours of in-service training each biennium. In-service training hours shall include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Infection Control

  • Domestic Violence

  • Medical Record Documentation and Legal Aspects Appropriate to Nursing Assistants

  • Resident Rights

  • Communication with cognitively impaired clients

  • CPR skills

  • Medical Error Prevention and Safety

Note: CNAs administering medication to home health agency patients should also be familiar with the requirements. 464.2035, F.S.

All Home Health Aides employed by home health agencies and nurse registries must complete an HIV/AIDS training course. They also are required to obtain and maintain a current certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Home health aides employed by Medicare and Medicaid home health agencies are required to have a total of 12 hours of in-service training during each 12-month period (this can be a calendar year or based on the date of hire). The HIV/AIDS training and CPR training may be counted toward meeting the 12 hours of in-service training.
