Client with Dementia: Agitation and Anxiety Improving Caregiver Empathy

Dementia is an umbrella term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life and independent function.

It is not a single disease. Instead, it describes a group of symptoms caused by underlying brain damage and diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Common Symptoms

  • Memory loss: Forgetting recent events, names, or familiar details.

  • Communication trouble: Struggling to find the right words or follow conversations.

  • Poor judgment: Making uncharacteristic decisions or having trouble handling money.

  • Disorientation: Getting lost in familiar places or losing track of time.

  • Mood and personality changes: Becoming anxious, irritable, or withdrawn.

Major Types of Dementia

  • Alzheimer’s disease: The most common cause, accounting for 60% to 80% of cases.

  • Vascular dementia: Caused by reduced blood flow or strokes in the brain.

  • Lewy body dementia: Involves abnormal protein deposits that affect thinking, movement, and behavior.

  • Frontotemporal dementia: Affects parts of the brain linked to personality, behavior, and language.

Dementia is not a normal part of aging, though the risk increases as people get older. While most conditions causing dementia are progressive and have no cure, some symptoms can be managed, and certain mimicking conditions (like vitamin deficiencies or thyroid issues) are reversible. You can learn more about clinical definitions and care resources through the National Institute on Aging.
